词汇 | flunky |
词源 | flunky. Flunky, also spelled flunkey, was originally a very nice Scots word, probably deriving from flanker, “one who stands at a person’s flank or side.” Flunky was simply the word for a serv- ant or footman, but by the 19th century it took on its contemp- tuous meaning of a lackey, a slavish, obedient servant who will always do his master’s bidding. |
