the Stendhal syndrome. In his diary, the French novelist Stendhal (a pseudonym of Marie-Henri Beyle, 1783–1842) tells of how, when visiting Florence in 1817, he fell ill in the pres- ence of all the great works of art around him, especially the frescoes in the church of Santa Croce. His heart beat irregularly, he feared he would fall down if he walked, and he felt his life draining away from him. Only when he left the church and sat down on a bench to read poetry did he feel better. Today his ex- perience is shared by scores of travelers in Florence every year, so many that psychiatrists have dubbed the phenomenon “the Stendhal syndrome.”
