heavyweight. A boxer who is a heavyweight fights in the heaviest competitive class, which is now over 175 pounds. The term has been applied to fighters in that approximate division since about 1850 although formal weight classes in boxing weren’t instituted until the Queensberry rules in 1872. In the United States the boxing use of heavyweight, combined with an earlier (1840s) use of heavy for wealthy or important, led to the expression heavyweight for any person, company, or other enti- ty that is very powerful, influential, or important.
