thesaurus. First recorded as the word for a collection of syn- onyms in 1852, with the publication of Peter Mark Roget’s The- saurus of English Words and Phrases (often called simply Roget’s today), our word thesaurus can be traced all the way back to the Greek thesauros, treasury. It was used in this sense of treasury in English long before it was applied to a collection of syno- nyms, dictionaries, for example, being called thesauruses. |
