词汇 | remembrance sunday |
词源 | Remembrance Sunday; Veteran’s Day. Remembrance Sun- day is the British equivalent of the U.S. Veteran’s Day, honoring those who died and served in all Great Britain’s wars. It falls on the Sunday nearest November 11th. Originally the national holiday was called Armistice Day in both countries and hon- ored only the dead of World War I. The British also call Re- membrance Sunday Remembrance Day and Poppy Day, after the artificial poppies sold that day to help needy former sol- diers. Veteran’s Day, which replaced the U.S. Armistice Day in 1954, always falls on November 11th. |
