cigar. From the Spanish cigaro meaning the same. Close but no cigar means “not a winning effort.” One of Sigmund Freud’s students, knowing the cigar is often viewed as a phallic symbol by psychiatrists, asked the confirmed cigar smoker what he thought of this theory. Between puffs on his long Havana, Freud replied, “Sometimes . . . a cigar is just a cigar.” |
