词汇 | churchill downs |
词源 | Churchill Downs. Downs are open, rolling, upland country. These are located in Louisville, Kentucky, and are named not after British great Winston Churchill but for the original prop- erty owners, the brothers John and Henry Churchill. Churchill Downs has been synonymous with the Kentucky Derby, estab- lished there in 1875 as an annual race for three-year-olds. The Kentucky Derby itself was named after the English Derby (pro- nounced Darby) at Epson Downs, first held in 1780 when es- tablished by the 12th earl of Derby. The first Kentucky Derby, the oldest American horse race, awarded the winner a purse of $1,000, plus the entry fees of all the horses. See derby. |
