词汇 | carpetbagger |
词源 | carpetbagger. In Victorian times luggage made from red carpets became an institution and was so popular among embezzling bankers as a place to stash their loot that the em- bezzlers themselves were dubbed carpetbaggers. After the American Civil War carpetbags were used by most of the un- scrupulous northern political adventurers, often poor whites, who packed their few worldly possessions in them to satisfy state property residence requirements and moved to the South to take advantage of the newly enfranchised blacks and to win power and fortune by controlling elections. These greedy, un- principled men, carrying their red carpetbags, and the previous association of the bags with men who milked banks as these men were milking the South, gave birth to their name, carpet- baggers, as well as to the name Carpetbag Era in American history. |
