词汇 | dumb ship |
词源 | dumb ship; lightship. Lightships are simply floating light- houses that warn other ships of danger and serve as aids in navigation, usually in places too distant from shore to erect a permanent structure. Almost all are dumb ships, unable to navigate themselves, and the first of them seems to have been anchored near the Thames estuary in 1732. The best-known American lightship is probably the dumb ship situated off Nan- tucket, which sank in 1935 after the liner Olympic rammed it. Today lighted buoys, which provide the same service, are more commonly used than lightships. |
