rigadoon. There is no Señor Mambo or Mademoiselle Twist, but there apparently once lived a Monsieur Rigadoon—a M. Rigaud, anyway. Rigadoon does sound Scottish, but the lively dance—which resembles the twist in that the two dancers do their pirouetting at a distance from one another—is decidedly Provençal in origin. It is named for Marseilles dancing master Rigaud, who invented it in the late 17th century; the English rigadoon is rigaudon in French. |
