Brazil. The country of Brazil was named for the wood called brazilwood, not the other way around. Brazilwood is a red- colored wood used as a dye source that takes its name from the Spanish brasa, “red coal or ember,” and was used in Europe centuries before what is now Brazil was discovered. Because so many similar dye-wood trees were found there, Portuguese ex- plorers named the country terra de Brasil, “land of red dye- wood,” which later became Brazil. |
