paddleball. A fast-growing amateur sport today, paddleball is played with the same basic rules as handball but with short- handled, perforated paddles, and a tennis-like ball. The sport was invented in 1930 by University of Michigan physical edu- cation teacher Earl Riskey. Riskey even invented the ball and paddle for the game, and along with James Naismith (of bas- ketball fame), William Morgan (the inventor of volleyball), and the Reverend Frank P. Beal (who invented paddle tennis), is one of the four people who are known to have invented a popu- lar sport. |
