Where’s the beef? Actress Clara Peller delivered this line hundreds of times in a 1984 television ad campaign for the Wendy’s hamburger chain comparing the beef content of its burgers with that of its competitors. The words soon became a catchphrase meaning “where’s the real substance of a plan, or an idea, or an issue.” It is still heard, often in political circles, as when Walter Mondale used it in his unsuccessful run for presi- dent in 1984. |
