词汇 | teetotal |
词源 | teetotal. The only invented word I know of that is recorded on the gravestone of its author. Some people believe this word for total abstinence from alcoholic beverages has something to do with tea: one drinks tea totally, nothing stronger. Perhaps this is one reason the word caught on when it was coined in 1833 by Dick Turner, an artisan in Preston, England. But Turn- er formed the word as a reduplicated variation of total, in a speech he made advocating total abstinence from intoxicating drink. The inscription on the reformer’s gravestone reads: “Be- neath this stone are deposited the remains of Richard Turner, author of the word Teetotal as applied to abstinence from all in- toxicating liquors, who departed this life on the 27th day of October, 1846, aged 56 years.” |
