Age of Anxiety; anxiety neurosis. Though it is possibly more pertinent today, the term Age of Anxiety was coined over a half century ago in 1948 by British-born poet W. H. (Wystan Hugh) Auden in his long Pulitzer Prize-winning poem The Age of Anxiety: A Baroque Ecologue. The term anxiety neurosis is a translation of Freud’s Angstneurose, which he coined in about 1895. The mild illness is marked by excessive anxiety. |
