| 词源 | eggplant Imam Baildi. A favorite Turkish dish featured in several cookbooks which translates as “the eggplant the imam (a Moslem priest or leader) fainted over.” According to the old story, an elderly imam married the daughter of a wealthy oil merchant, who brought as her dowry 12 huge man-sized jars of the world’s finest olive oil. A famed cook, his bride pre- pared him a delicious eggplant dish a few days after the wed- ding. So pleased was he that he ordered her to prepare the dish every day for dinner. For 12 days all went well, but on the 13th day no eggplant graced the table. When the furious imam demanded to know why, his bride explained: “Dear husband, you shall have to purchase me more oil, as I have used all that I brought with me from my father.” This financial shock proved too much for the elderly imam who straighta- way fainted. |
