The words are from Rudyard Ki- pling’s poem “The Female of the Species” (1911), in which he writes: “For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.” This is widely believed of a number of species, but has never generally been proved. The example usually given is the American black widow spider (Latrodectus mactans), which eats its mate. This is unfair, however, for the male of Latrodectus sometimes eats the female.
