snug as a bug in a rug. One would guess that this is a folk saying of untraceable origins, but it apparently is the invention of Benjamin Franklin, who jotted it off in a letter in 1772. It means “the utmost in contentment.” Franklin is of course re- sponsible for many maxims that are part of our speech today, including a word to the wise; time is money; death and taxes; an ounce of prevention; and early to bed, early to rise. |
