Sock Saunders. A mythical American character of the woods more human than paul bunyan. Louise Dickenson Rich in We Took to the Woods (1942) explains Sock this way: “If I a man . . . slips on a log, but catches himself in time, he says, ‘Foxed you that time, Sock Saunders.’ If he cuts his foot, he explains, ‘Sock Saunders got me.’ There are no stories about Sock Saunders. He’s just the guy who hangs around and makes life complicated.” |
