		the clicker. A common name for the television ultrasonic remote control device used to change TV channels without leaving one’s seat, or for turning the TV on or off. The device was invented by physicist Robert Adler, who worked for Zenith Electronics, in 1956. Known as “the father of the clicker” though he held some 200 other patents as well, Adler’s coinven- tor was Zenith Electronics engineer Eugene Polley. Ads featur- ing the clicker proclaimed: “Nothing between you and the set but space.” Some 10 million devices were sold.  |
