词汇 | hidebound |
词源 | hidebound. Cramped, constricted people, those who are rigidly opinionated, have been called hidebound since the 16th century. The word derives from a term applied to ema- ciated cattle in days before veterinary science had made many advances. Feeding and care of cattle was so poor in En- gland at the time that by winter the animals were often thin and diseased and had lost the fatty tissue under the skin. As a result their skin clung tightly to their bones, they moved stiffly, and their hides couldn’t be removed from their back- bone or ribs when they died. Their physical condition natu- rally suggested the inelastic, constipated minds of some people. |
