词汇 | terrorist |
词源 | terrorist. During the French Revolution period called the Reign of Terror, as many as 17,000 people may have been put to death for opposing the regime before the bloodshed ended in 1794 with the bloody-minded Robespierre’s guillotine execu- tion. Certainly thousands were killed in Paris alone by what the French called terroristes, agents or partisans of the revolution- ary tribunal who practiced terrorism. Soon the new word, shortened to terrorist in English, came to describe any such “hell hounds . . . let loose on the people,” as Edward Burke called them. See guillotine; suicide bomber. |
