In the 16th century, excavated chambers, or grotte, in ancient Roman buildings revealed murals on the walls de- picting figures that were unnaturally distorted or comically ex- aggerated. These figures were called grotesca, after the grotte they were found in, grotesca eventually becoming the English grotesque, for any similar figure. |
