ground floor; first floor; to get in on the ground floor. In Britain and other countries, ground floor refers to the street- level floor of a building, while first floor refers to the next floor up. In America these would be called the first and second floors, respectively. However, ground floor is used in America as a synonym for the lobby of a building. To get in on the ground floor means “to be among the first” to invest in a busi- ness, stock, etc., that shows promise of being profitable. |
