television. Like telephone, television seems to have been an old coinage, in this case from the Greek tele, far, and the Greek vision, vision. The word is not recorded until about 1910 and seems to have been applied to another device, not the television we know today. The first television set was demonstrated at Chicago’s 1933 Century of Progress Exposition, but it wasn’t until the 1940s that programming became common. See radio; telegraph; tv dinner. |
