词汇 | pie in the sky |
词源 | pie in the sky. An empty wish or promise. The expression may have originated with a song written by IWW (Internation- al Workers of the World) organizer Joe Hill, whose real name was Joseph Hilstrom, in the years before World War I. Called “The Preacher and the Slave” four of its lines went: “You will eat, by and by, In that glorious land above the sky (way up high!); Work and pray, live on hay, You’ll get pie in the sky when you die.” (That’s a lie!) |
