picked too soon (early). Some fruits (pears, peaches, straw- berries, etc.) ripen after they are picked, but not if they are picked before a certain time—if they are so picked they will never ripen. This may well be the origin of the old expression picked too soon or early, referring to a child who is forced to ex- cel at something he or she may be good at but isn’t ready to pursue, unable at the time to be anything but a child.
