词汇 | holofernes |
词源 | Holofernes. The name of several historical figures real and fictional. The earliest (the book of Judith in the Apocrypha) is the Babylonian general of Nebuchadnezzar who was decapitat- ed by the comely Judith after he let his guard down and got drunk when she promised to sleep with him. Judith holding Holofernes’s head is the subject of a number of gory Renais- sance paintings. Her action saved her city. Holofernes is also the name of the great doctor of theology Tubal Holofernes, who taught the young Gargantua in Rabalais’s Gargantua (1534); it is also the pedantic schoolmaster’s name in Shake- speare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost (1595). Shakespeare is thought to have ridiculed the learned John Florio (1553–1625), the son of an Italian Protestant refugee and well known as a lexicographer and translator, the Bard inventing Holofernes as an imperfect anagram of Florio’s full name. |
