词汇 | holy roller |
词源 | holy roller. A term common in America for a member of any religious sect whose services are often characterized by ec- static movements that may include rolling on the ground or floor; the word is also applied to any overbearingly religious person. A holy tone or holy whine refers to the speaking of Primitive Baptist preachers, who sound an audible “ah” at the end of each pause for breath. Today holy roller is a disparaging term for any zealous, judgmental, opinionated religious per- son. But originally, in about 1841, the term was coined to de- scribe a New York State sect also called the Sweezites, one of whose practices was to roll upon the floor during religious ser- vices. Over the years it became the name of several other sects as well. |
