Canada. Canada actually appears to be an American Indian word, but several amusing stories are told regarding its origin. One has an Indian chief telling French explorer Jacques Cartier that his little village was named Kana da and Cartier thinking the name applied to the whole vast region. Another story has a Spanish explorer climbing a tree to sight what prominent geo- graphic features lay to the north. “Aca nada (Nothing’s there),” he called down to his comrades, who took to calling the region Acanada, which was soon corrupted to Canada. |
