词汇 between a rock and a hard place
词源
between a rock and a hard place.  In days past if one was badly in need of money, almost bankrupt, he or she was said to be between a rock and a hard place. This expression was proba- bly born in Arizona during a financial panic early in this centu- ry, but over the years its meaning changed. It came to mean being in a very tight spot, on the horns of a dilemma in making a hard decision. The words do lend themselves best to this last definition, for wherever one turns in making the decision there is rock or something as hard as or harder than rock.
