Betty. The Zero was and still remains a well-known World War II fighter plane. But relatively few people know the name of the Japanese bomber: the Betty, possibly named by U.S. fli- ers. The Betty was the plane shot down by U.S. aces flying P-38 Lightning fighters in 1945, off of Bougainville; one of the pas- sengers was Admiral Isoroko Yamamoto, who had planned the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. |
