词汇 be smart
词源
be smart. The country merchant’s storekeeping methods could be quite sophisticated. An early store owner, for example, might hang up two boots, one on each side of the chimney, and put all the money he received in one, all the receipts for money he paid out in the other. At the end of the year he would empty both boots and make an accounting. But, as a rule, bookkeep- ing methods were quite complicated, as were weighing and measuring techniques. There was even a complicated code sys- tem for marking goods so that the merchant could tell what ev- ery piece of merchandise cost him without the customer know- ing, which gave the storekeeper an advantage when bargaining. A merchant, for instance, might take the phrase now be sharp represent 12345678910 (an N would equal the numeral 1, and O the numeral 2, a W the numeral 3, and so on). Every trusted clerk would be given this equation, and if a piece of merchan- dise was marked, say, NWW on the back, anyone with the for- mula would know its cost was $1.33.
