sexist. A relative newcomer, based on racist and coined in an 11/18/65 speech by Paulette M. Leet, director of special pro- grams at Franklin and Marshall College. Sexist refers to a per- son whose attitude or behavior is based on traditional stereo- types of sexual roles. Said Ms. Leet in her speech: “When you argue . . . that since fewer women write good poetry this justi- fies their total exclusion [from taking English courses], you are taking a position analogous to that of the racist—I might call you in this case a ‘sexist.’ . . .” |
