New Amsterdam. The Dutch name for what is now New York City. New Amsterdam, named after the city of Amster- dam in the Netherlands in about 1626, was originally one of the Dutch trading posts in New Netherland. Among other firsts during the New Amsterdam period of the city, the first murder occurred in 1638, the first lottery was held in 1665, and the first “welfare” assistance was given in 1661. |
