词汇 | out of touch |
词源 | out of touch. Military drills of the late 18th century em- ployed tight formations where every soldier in the ranks had to be close enough to the man on the left and right of him so that his swinging elbows brushed against his companions’. A soldier who failed to do this and caused a gap in the line was said to be out of touch and the military use of this expression yielded the civilian saying, meaning “to lose contact with a situation.” |
