pumice. Pumice is a porous, spongy form of volcanic glass used as an abrasive or polish; there is an entire mountain of it on the island of Lipari. In 1645 one writer reported that “Ital- ians to this day have the habit of pumicing their skin to get off the hair.” Pumice comes from the Latin Pumex, for the sub- stance, while pounce, “a fine powder formerly used to blot ink on paper,” comes from the same source. |
