pull the string. To pull the string is to pitch a change-of-pace ball to a baseball batter to put him off balance. The pitcher usu- ally throws a fast ball first; his next pitch is often a slow ball, which to the off-balance batter appears to be “attached to and pulled back by a string.” Quoting Burt Dunne’s pamphlet col- lection The Folger Dictionary of Baseball (1958), in The Dickson Baseball Dictionary Paul Dickson tells a good story about an- other possible, if unlikely, derivation: “Burt Dunne says this is derived from a trick featuring ‘a trapped badger’ in a box over- head. The rookie releases the ‘badger’ by pulling the string, and says Dunne, ‘down come refuse—and worse.’ ”
