Seven Last Words. The Seven Last Words are the last utter- ance of Christ on the cross. This was also the title of a musical composition by Haydn, written in 1785. The words are “My God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (more strictly, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”), recorded in Mark 15:34, and Matt. 27:46, which gives the Hebrew as “Eloi, Eloi, lama sa- bachthani?” But the seven last words of Christ are also consid- ered to be the seven expressions given in the Bible (including this) that are Christ’s last words. |
