词源 | on the hip. To have someone under one’s control. Traced back to the 1500s by the OED, this expression derives from an even older wrestling term. Shakespeare used it in several plays, including The Merchant of Venice (1596), and Eugene O’Neill used it in The Iceman Cometh (1940): “That bastard, Hickey, has got Harry on the hip.” |
