head ransom. The greatest poem of Icelandic author Egill Skall-Grimson (c. 910–980). He wrote it in 948 after being cap- tured by his enemy Eirik Bloodaxe, ruler of York. Old Bloodaxe told him he would spare his life if he wrote in one night a mag- nificent poem honoring him. This proved just the inspiration Egill needed. |
