sholom aleichem. A traditional greeting of Jews meaning “hello, how are you?” the response being the reverse order, aleichem sholom, “and unto you, peace.” The Russian-born Yiddish-writing author Solomon Rabinowitz (1859–1916) took his pen name, Sholom Aleichem, from these words. According to one tale, Aleichem, called “the Jewish Mark Twain,” claimed to have met Mark Twain in New York City. “I am the American Sholom Aleichem,” Twain modestly told him. See triskaidekaphobia. |
