词汇 | shoe tree |
词源 | Shoe Tree. A cottonwood tree growing near Middlegate, Ne- vada, that is covered with many styles and sizes of shoes hang- ing from its branches. According to one source, about 20 years ago, a newly married couple out camping had an argument un- der the tree and the groom threw the bride’s shoes up into the cottonwood. When the bride realized she would have to walk home barefooted, the couple made up and the groom carried her home. But about a year later the couple returned to the tree and threw their firstborn baby’s shoes up into the branches, a custom observed ever since. |
