词汇 frankenfood
词源
frankenfood. Genetically engineered fruits and vegetables, such as new strains of corn and tomatoes. The expression takes its name from the idealistic German scientist Baron Franken- stein in Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, or the Modern Pro- metheus (1818). Frankenstein, of course, engineered a monster who later turned upon his creator. Frankenfood was coined by Paul Lewis, a Boston College English professor, the word first appearing in print in a letter he wrote to the New York Times on June 28, 1992. According to Anne H. Soukhanov in Word Watch (1995), Lewis “coined Frankenfood in the second week of June 1992,” a few weeks before his Times letter. His letter read in part: “Ever since Mary Shelley’s baron rolled his im- proved human out of the lab, scientists have been bringing such good things to life. If they want to sell us Frankenfood, perhaps it’s time to gather the villagers, light some torches, and head to the castle.” See frankenstein.
