A universal phrase that has as its source the punishment of a slave by his owner by selling him to a sug- arcane plantation on the lower Mississippi, where work condi- tions were at their worst. The expression appears to have been first recorded in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852). |
