词源 | hang it up. American slang since about the 1920s for “to quit work or retire,” hang it up is a shortened term for the baseball expression to hang up one’s spikes (“One more season and I’ll hang up my spikes”) meaning the same. A less frequent varia- tion among men is hang up one’s jockstrap, a phrase of more re- cent vintage. See also jock. |
