A popular song pub- lished in 1932 had these words as its title and they quickly be- came the common plea of panhandlers throughout America during the Great Depression. American songwriter E. Y. (Yip) Harburg (1898–1981) wrote the 1932 song, which was an American pop hit throughout the Great Depression. Among many other songs, Harburg also wrote the lyrics to “It’s Only a Paper Moon” (1932), “Over the Rainbow” (1939); and “Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” the last two for the movie The Wizard of Oz (1939). |
