Whalemen’s Chapel. The Seamen’s Bethel, a famous church in New Bedford, Massachusetts, with many memorials to New England whalemen. Wrote Melville in Moby-Dick (1851): “In this same New Bedford there stands a Whalemen’s Chapel, and few are the moody fishermen, shortly bound for the Indian Ocean or Pacific, who fail to make a Sunday visit to the spot. I am sure that I did not.” |
