词汇 | westinghoused |
词源 | Westinghoused. To be put to death in the electric chair. Thomas Edison championed DC (direct current) over the AC (alternating current) that his competitors preferred to use in converting the world to electricity. AC eventually triumphed, but not before Edison campaigned stubbornly against it over the years. The Wizard of Menlo Park even went so far as to coin Westinghoused (after the name of his rival the Westinghouse Company) as a replacement for the word electrocuted, in refer- ence to criminals put to death in the (AC) electric chair. The coinage didn’t live long but did have some currency. See electrocute. |
