词汇 | ford-s theatre |
词源 | Ford’s Theatre. The national landmark in Washington, D. C., was a Baptist church before theatrical manager John Thompson Ford converted it to a playhouse in 1861 and named it after himself. Only a year later it burned to the ground in a mysterious fire. Ford rebuilt it in brick the following year, only to see it become the most famous—or infamous—American theater on April 14, 1865, when Abra- ham Lincoln was assassinated there. The theater was then purchased by the U.S. government and converted into an of- fice building. But the jinx continued in 1890, when part of the building collapsed, killing 22 government workers. Since it reopened as the restored Ford’s Theatre in 1965, there have been no further incidents. |
